Taiwanese musical An Oxcart for Dowry was jointly created by Chiayi-rooted Taiwnaese theatre company Our Theatre and Ryuzanji Jimusho from Tokyo Japan, which received great reviews in the 2018 premiere and followed by sold out tours every year. An Oxcart for Dowry is an adaptation of Hualien novelist WANG Chen-Ho’s novel of the same name. The staged play is about a series of realistic yet absurd stories that happened between a poor married couple Wan-Fa and A-How and their new neighbor Jian. The story is the most vivid reflection of humanity’s struggle in life and dignity, desire and virtue among Taiwan’s lower class people.

What is the purpose of life? Is it dignity? Virtue? Money? Or just to earn a day’s bread……“Even if I had to step on someone’s hands to get this piece of bread, the savory taste coming from the blood splatter was not too bad.”
